Major Project Accomplishments

SANBAG - Redlands Passenger Rail

Linking the cities of San Bernardino and Redlands, the Redlands Passenger Rail Project will provide for a commuter rail system to improve commuter travel to and from home, work, school, shopping, and entertainment. The project aims to expand mass transit use options for commuters traveling from west San Bernardino to the University of Redlands along the I-10 corridor. Using the existing rail right-of-way to help meet the growing local and regional travel markets, it will reduce automobile trips, fuel consumption and pollution by providing alternatives to driving.

New infrastructure along the line will include five stations and associated facilities, new and upgraded track infrastructure, new signaling, communications, crossing and bridge improvements. The project further aims to develop transit oriented developments/centers to serve rapidly growing population and employment centers. Transit connections for riders will be maximized by linking new transit with intermodal hubs, such as the San Bernardino Intermodal Transit Center and Transit Village planned for Rialto Avenue and E Street.

PRE is currently participating in the initial planning stages and working with the agency to provide conceptual ideas in regards to railroad signal and communication system layouts. Preliminary engineering is also taking place with PRE supporting other disciplines to determine the best placement of infrastructure and avoid costly change orders.

Costs are being taken into consideration, with PRE working diligently to provide a system that is not only safe but cost effective and efficient. The development of cost estimates is integral to the success of the project, weighing the cost/benefit issues that arise with the implementation of a new commuter rail system.
