Major Project Accomplishments

SANBAG - Downtown San Bernardino Passenger Rail

The proposed Downtown San Bernardino Passenger Rail Project will provide for a Metrolink station which will tie not only bus services into the Metrolink system, but also pave the way for a future commuter rail system which will expand mass transit use options for commuters traveling from west San Bernardino to the University of Redlands along the I-10 corridor.

PRE has worked diligently to provide the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) with a railroad signal system that provides safety for passengers, pedestrians and drivers alike. Beginning at the earliest stages of development, PRE has provided conceptual layouts and worked with other disciplines to provide the agency with a railroad signal system which integrates with the rest of the project. Development of detailed signal designs is crucial to the success of the project, and PRE has worked to produce a design which takes into account the varying types of train on the tracks and interfaces which are necessary between Metrolink and the BNSF Railway.

The project includes five crossings, and PRE has created detailed designs which take into account the differing speeds of trains within the area and the necessary crossing warning system configurations needed. PRE attended diagnostic meetings and provided feedback on crossing improvements based upon solid experience.

In order to provide a proven backbone which will one day connect with the rest of the Metrolink system, PRE designed a detailed communication system which utilizes fiber optic cable between stations, and the addition of a Microwave location to send the data to the Metrolink network. This fiber backbone is not only for Metrolink usage, but will provide a transportation method for video data which will be available at the San Bernardino Station and San Bernardino Intermodal Transit Center and Transit Village for security uses. Additional fiber is available for other uses depending on need.

PRE will support SANBAG by providing design review during construction, application development for microprocessor locations, and application support during the cutover. These services will continue until the completion of this project.
